I found a long-lost onion in my kitchen last week. It had a little green sprout growing out of the top. Normally I’d just throw it in the compost pile, but I decided to get creative and plant it like a flower bulb!

The truth is, I don’t know really. I’m just experimenting. And for the cost of one flowerpot and some dirt, it’s a cheap experiment.
It’s taken me a long time to get interested in gardening because I always felt ‘not ready’: I didn’t know how to grow things, what to plant, how to take care of them. What if they died? What if my garden doesn’t look lush & gorgeous like my neighbor’s? Or I don’t have enough money/time/desire to take care of a whole garden, so I won’t do anything at all.
Last year I started with a different approach. Maybe I’ll just plant a couple of flowerpots with herbs that I already use in cooking. Amazingly, most things grew. Some didn’t, of course. But I had the satisfaction of snipping some fresh herbs from my windowsill directly into my cooking – which, if you haven’t tried it, is well worth the investment of a flowerpot and some dirt.
So, don’t be scared of experimenting. Even if you have the least green-thumb on the planet, try one flowerpot with an herb that you already enjoy eating. Or join the Grow-A-Long. We planted scallions from bulbs! I’m going to post our update this week along with the rest of our terrace garden – herbs, tomatoes, chili peppers, lettuce, swiss chard, cucumbers and flowers
I love this! Please let us know how it turns out! The kids wanted to plant the avocado seed from our guac this weekend, so I googled that. It’ll be at least 10 years before we have avocados (if it even grows), but it’ll be fun to watch it in the meantime! They peeled it and suspended it in water with toothpicks.
